Do agencies reference check you?

The answer is yes – reference checking is part of our recruitment process.

Why do we need to reference check you?

Reference checks are used to confirm the details you’ve supplied in your employment history. Employers can also contact your referee to ask questions about your employment, such as your attitude to work and reliability, to decide if they would like to continue with your application.

When do we reference check you?

We would usually reference check you as part of our screening process, to decide whether we feel you would be a suitable candidate to put forward to a potential employer.

Who do we contact as a reference?

This depends on who you have supplied as a reference, ideally we want to contact a reference that has worked and managed you previously, such as a Manager, Line Manager or Supervisor.

This is my first job, who do I supply as a reference?

If you’ve recently left education you can supply an academic reference from University, College or School such as one of your Tutors, Teachers or Lecturers.

You can also provide a character reference or personal reference as it is sometimes known. Character references can be supplied by someone who knows you on a personal level, for example a teammate, a coach, a client or friend. Please note, you cannot use a close relative as a reference. A character reference is usually a one page letter, that consists of:

  • Their relationship to you
  • How long they have known you
  • 3 – 5 positive qualities about you with examples
  • Their personal recommendation

Important to remember!

You should always ask someone if they will be a reference for you, before you provide their name and contact details to a potential employer.
