We asked our Consultants what they look for in a CV when filtering through applications, and we have listed their top to do’s and don’ts below…
Do's
- Listing relevant qualifications to the job role, i.e. FLT licences, first aid training etc.
- Appropriate hobbies and interests
- Specifying your exact skills
- Listing your work history and time spent at those companies
- Listing the duties you performed in role on your work history in detail
- A personal profile, tell us about yourself and show your personality
- Using bullet points to make the format easy to read
- Making your CV short and sweet (CV’s should be no longer than 2 pages)
- Having the same font throughout and all font being in the same size
- An easy to follow layout
- A good solid work history
- Making sure to add in your contact details and location
- Your work history should be listed from the most recent to the oldest
Don'ts
- Don’t just post the job title, make sure to add where you worked and when
- Photos
- Irrelevant hobbies (i.e. playing COD)
- Don’t use block paragraphs, there’s too much information to read and it’s not easy to identify key information (use bullet points)
- Don’t type as you talk, using slang etc.
- Don’t talk negatively about other companies you have worked for
- No more than 2 pages long, too much detail can be distracting and is too time consuming
- Spelling and grammar mistakes. Make sure to spell check your document or ask someone to proof read it for you
- No fancy fonts, keep the font professional
- Don’t make it generic, tailor your CV to the job you’re applying for
- Don’t leave unexplained gaps in your work history
