Why is it easier to get a job when you’ve got a job?

Have you ever heard that it’s easier for you to get a job when you’ve got a job? Well, it’s absolutely true! Here’s why…

One main reason that someone may not be working is because they are wanting a job in an exact field of work. Unfortunately, you can’t always guarantee that you can gain a job in your preferred field straight away, and sometimes we need to work any job while we seek the exact job we want. This is because if you’re seeking work while not being in a job, especially if you’ve been job seeking for a prolonged period of time, this can cause hiring managers/recruiters to make assumptions and it gives the wrong impression about you, including:

  1. Your work ethic
  2. Your reliability
  3. Your commitment to work
  4. It gives the impression you’re unemployable
  5. You can end up with long gaps in your work history
  6. It looks like you can’t hold down a job

Plus, the longer you are out of work, the longer you are not utilising your skills. This could definitely prove more difficult if you’re looking for a job in the same field of work but they are seeking employees with recent experience. As time goes on, technology and ways of doing things change, which employees will constantly be trained on to keep them up to date – if you haven’t worked for a prolonged period of time your ways of doing things may have become outdated and the company may be looking to hire someone that they don’t have to re-train.

If you’re already in a job whilst looking for a job, it shows that you are willing to work, even if it’s not your dream job. The qualities you will show to hiring managers/recruiters are that you are hardworking, dedicated, committed and reliable which are the main qualities that any employer looks for in a new member of staff.

If you’re out of work due to redundancy or you haven’t been in work due to a long term illness, being a stay at home parent or stay at home carer for example, make sure to highlight this in your application to inform the employer of the reason for a gap in your work history.
