Why Nottingham’s High Unemployment Might Be the Opportunity Local Employers Don’t Expect...

UK unemployment has risen to 5% – but what does that really look like locally?

National figures only tell part of the story. When we look closer at our key recruiting areas, the picture changes – with higher unemployment rates still being reported in regions like High Peak, Derby, Ashfield and Nottingham (Office for National Statistics & Nomis data).

Nottingham’s unemployment rate is higher than that of its neighbouring areas, and at first glance, it might be tempting to assume that people simply don’t want to work. In reality, the opposite is often true. Many job seekers are eager and willing to work, but the right opportunities simply aren’t available.

Data from Indeed shows that Nottingham’s average pay for Warehouse Workers is lower than neighbouring areas. This can make it harder to attract candidates, as many may prefer roles closer to home with higher pay, especially with travel costs. Focusing on the local talent pool is essential!
