Labour’s Plans to ‘Get Britain Working Again’

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stated that the government have inherited a country that “isn’t working” and he has promised to tackle unemployment within the UK. During the Covid pandemic, the number of people classed as economically inactive* surged to over 9 million and has remained at that level ever since.

The highest rate of economic inactivity is between 16 to 24 year olds. Labour are launching a new “Youth Guarantee Project” where Sir Keir Startmer has pledged that young people will have ‘guaranteed’ access to apprenticeships and training.

According to Gov.uk (Nov 2024), the Government are unveiling the biggest employment reform in a generation to ‘get Britain working again’. Labour are looking to increase the employment rate from 75% to 80% by encouraging around 2 million more people back into work.

*Economically inactive refers to those who are not employed or actively looking for work

More details are yet to be confirmed and there will be a review of sickness benefits in the new year.
