The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced in his Autumn 2021 budget on Oct 27th 2021 that minimum wage is set to increase by 6.6%, rising from £8.91 to £9.50 per hour from April 1st 2022 for workers aged 23 years and over. The new rates will also see an increase from £8.36 to £9.18 per hour for ages 21 – 22 years and pay for apprentices will increase from £4.30 to £4.81 per hour.
This represents a 59p increase for 23+ yrs, an 82p increase for 21-22 yrs and 51p increase for apprentices.
The new rate equates to an increase of about £1,000 per year for a full time worker.
The Government has set a target to raise in the National Living Wage to £10 per hour by the next election (May 2nd, 2024).
Rishi Sunak is also set to launch a £3billion investment which will aim to retrain thousands of British workers so they can get jobs with better pay.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s goal is to move “towards a high wage, high skill, high productivity economy that the people of this country need and deserve”.

In the recent months, with UK job vacancies hitting a record high as a result of staff shortages due to Brexit and Covid, we have seen a huge increase in our clients increasing their wages to attract more candidates to their roles. On average, 54% of our clients pay above the Minimum Wage. However, our Burton branch has a whopping 70% of clients that pay over, and Ripley is close behind at 65%!
