10 Reasons Why You Should Consider a Career in Recruitment

Have you ever considered developing your career within recruitment? Here’s 10 reasons why you should…

1. It’s a rewarding environment

Working within recruitment is really rewarding in two ways;

Firstly, you are changing people’s lives. In recruitment you are helping people in your local community to find work, which leads to them earning money and being able to progress in their life to own a house, buy a car or afford to start a family. We often get really lovely messages and gifts from our candidates who are so grateful for the opportunities they’ve gained and how thankful they are when they’ve secured permanent work. At the end of the day, that is the main purpose of providing a recruitment service and it really does help to put a smile on your face, even on the hardest of days!

Secondly, the satisfaction and delight our Consultants feel when they have been canvassing a company and finally receive bookings from them is so rewarding! To know that your persistence and negotiation skills have paid off and you can add a new company to your plan is great feeling, especially when you start filling those bookings and get great feedback from your client service reviews.

2. You are taught everything you need to know

No experience is required to work in recruitment, as you will be provided with all of the knowledge you need. At Essential we run our own Essential Academy where you will go through 2 stages of learning to become a fully fledged Recruitment Consultant.

3.  Great Incentives

Fancy receiving bonuses for your hard work? Of course you do! In recruitment there are a lot of commission based schemes where you can earn bonuses on the profits made, for example at Essential we have multiple schemes available where you can gain a % of the profit made on new clients you’ve brought onto the plan or a % of the fee for a permanent placement.

4. Confidence Booster

If you would of seen how shy some of our Consultants were when they first joined us you wouldn’t believe it was the same person! Working within recruitment involves communicating with people all day long; You will be answering phones, interviewing candidates, making site visits, attending sales visits and door knocking around local industrial estates – the role is jammed packed with human interaction!

5. Improves your people skills

As you will be dealing with people, you will become experienced in understanding how to deal with people. In recruitment you will come across people from all sorts of backgrounds which will help you to become more in touch with being empathetic towards people’s upbringings. In life you come across the same characters time and time again, and dealing with all of these different type of people makes you learn how to change your approach to suit someone’s personality and temperament.

6. Helps you to understand the market better

Working directly within the job market really helps you to understand the reality of the labour market. You will become so much more aware of the rates of unemployability, candidate availability, the reality of how hard it is to recruit for certain types of roles, finding candidates with specific skills, the reality of trying to recruit for minimum wage roles and much more.

It also helps you to understand the situational circumstances of the types of candidates who you are recruiting to fill your vacancies. For example, did you know that a high percentage of our candidates can’t call up to apply for a job because they don’t have credit? That’s why we offer various ways for candidates to be able to get in touch with us. Working within recruitment stops you being presumptuous, like assuming that everyone has a contracted phone. Recruitment is a great industry to be in to give you a different perspective on things.

6. You build and strengthen relationships

While running your accounts you will be focused on building partnerships with your clients and keeping good relationships with your candidates, which will help to add value to any relationships you build with people outside of work too.  If you love to network, recruitment is definitely an industry that will allow you to build up your contacts.

7. It improves your geographical knowledge

While working as a Recruitment Consultant you will be sourcing candidates and potential new clients from all of the local areas to your office. You will be involved in sales activity to go door knocking around local business parks and leafleting around local areas to hand out to the public which will help you to gain extensive knowledge of the area you live in and the surrounding local areas to it.

8. Lots of progression opportunities

There is room to grow in a recruitment business, we’ve had staff join us as Resourcers and move through the ranks to Recruitment Consultants, Senior Recruitment Consultants and Branch Managers! There are also other departments you could expand into such as permanent recruitment, compliance or training.

9. So much variety in your day to day

Working as a Consultant doesn’t involve sitting at your desk all day, so if you love to get out and about this is definitely for you! The role will involve a mix of your day to day admin work as well as on-site visits, inducting candidates, interviewing and much more – we often hear that our Consultants love working in the industry because no two days are ever the same!

10. It constantly challenges you

If you love a challenge, recruitment is definitely for you! There is such a buzz when you’ve been able to fill bookings that were previously difficult for others to fill or converting a company to work in partnership with you. Every day will be testing you, whether in recruitment or sales, and if that’s how you thrive then recruitment is the industry for you!
