Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Burton upon Trent
Salary: £45,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering team on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems and engineered products, producing detailed CAD models and manufacturing documentation, and supporting projects through the design, testing and production lifecycle.

This role would suit an engineer with strong SolidWorks experience and a background in sheet metal design who is looking to further develop their career within a collaborative engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities of a Mechanical Design Engineer:

• Design mechanical systems, enclosures, canopies, frames, ducting and associated assemblies.
• Produce accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
• Generate and maintain engineering documentation and Bills of Materials (BoMs).
• Perform basic engineering calculations relating to structural loading, airflow and component sizing.
• Support design reviews, prototype development and product validation activities.
• Work closely with electrical and production teams to ensure successful product integration and manufacture.
• Provide technical support to production and resolve engineering-related build queries.
• Ensure designs comply with quality standards, specifications and industry requirements.
• Support testing and inspection activities to verify product performance and safety.
• Identify opportunities for design improvements, cost reduction and standardisation.

Requirements of a Mechanical Design Engineer:

Essential

• Degree, HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience using SolidWorks.
• Experience in sheet metal design.
• Ability to produce detailed engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation.
• Understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable

• Experience working with enclosures, canopies, containerised equipment or similar fabricated products.
• Knowledge of weldments and structural design principles.
• Understanding of airflow management, cooling systems or ventilation design.
• Familiarity with PDM systems and document control processes.
• Knowledge of materials including steel, aluminium and corrosion protection methods.
