Naming and shaming minimum wage dodgers

The government is intent on outing the employers who pay less than minimum wage by changing the way things work. Under current rules, the minimum amount of NMW owed to workers had to be at least £2,000 and the average per worker at least £500 before an employer could be named.- The new policy is that ANY employer failing to provide the minimum wage will be threatened with a fine and ‘reputational consequences.’

In 2012/13, HM Revenue and Customs found that 26,500 employees had not been paid the minimum wage they were entitled to, prompting the recovery of £3.9 million in unpaid earnings from employers. So far, only one employer has been outed for failure to pay. Charles Cotton, reward advisor at the CIPD believes that making these changes will make Britain eligible to successfully compete in global economics, by driving up quality of workforces and workplaces.
